Project Name:

Little Mix MTV EMA 2020 Performance

Client: Black Skull Creative

Outline: The virtual 2020 MTV European Music Awards were held on 8 November 2020 and shared via a Facebook Live stream, on MTV UK and broadcast on Channel 5. The show was hosted by pop superstars, Little Mix, who also performed their single “Sweet Melody” in a special video performance created especially for the awards. The video was set in a futuristic, celestial goddess inspired “otherworld” which was created by placing a physical set and video installation in an extended, artificial reality brought to life by Matrix UK Solutions, with creative direction and content design by Black Skull Creative.

Detail: To create the artificial reality set, the Matrix team built a 16.5m x 4m LED wall which was flown in three sections to create a 4224 x 1024px digital canvas as part of a physical set provided by All Access Staging. Three camera channels were used to record the group performing in front of this backdrop while a pair of Disguise media servers (outputting multiple concurrent 4K outputs to timecode) dealt with the LED content playback and rendered individual AR overlays for each of the three camera perspectives. The three cameras were repositioned for each of the four passes recorded – providing a total of 12 different camera angles for the edit. All channels ran back to a PPU and record rack and the overlay was rendered in real time on site; both raw and composited content was delivered immediately after the shoot to facilitate a 72-hour post-production turnaround.

Little Mix’s 2020 MTV EMA performance was shot in just four hours and installed, filmed and derigged over a two-day period at The Mill. The video was directed by acclaimed live director, Liz Clare, and has amassed over 1.8 million views on YouTube alone.

Creating this larger than life performance with Matrix was a great way to continue to develop our ongoing working relationship in extended reality after the standout GRM Rated Awards that we did together in the summer. As always, Ben and his team provided the perfect level of technical support to allow us to take our creative ideas to the next level and push boundaries for Little Mix and the EMAs.
